AVID

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college readiness system that is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. The AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional learning, and acts as a catalyst for college readiness.  The goal of AVID is to provide a college culture building-wide for all students. AVID is implemented on an international scale, serving 48 states, 16 countries, and reaching more than 900,000 students worldwide within the AVID Elective course.  West Fargo Public Schools implemented AVID in 2007 at Cheney Middle School.  Since this time, AVID has grown from one section of 6th grade students to 23 sections in grades 6-12 among LMS, CMS, SHS, and WFHS.

At the secondary grade levels (7th-12th grades), AVID is an approved elective course taken during the school day. Students are usually selected to enroll in an AVID class after an interview process. For one class period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities focused on student success and college readiness. Students enrolled in AVID are asked to enroll in the most challenging curriculum offered and are taught the skills, provided the resources, and given the support to be successful at the highest levels of student achievement.  Core content area teachers are also trained in research-based WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading) strategies which incorporate college readiness academic skills into classroom lessons for all students. 100% of AVID Graduating seniors are accepted to a four-year university among many other types of institutions.  The seniors graduate with multiple scholarships and grants, totaling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
