It's More than a Meal Application

West Fargo Public Schools participates in United States Department of Agriculture meal programs to provide breakfast and lunch to students. Federal funding is received for meals served to students based on eligibility levels. To determine eligibility, a free/reduced meal application must be completed each year by families who may qualify. Qualification is primarily determined by income; the federal income chart shows eligibility by family size and income. Families receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), or the Temporary Assistance Program for Needy Families (TANF) are eligible for the program regardless of income.

West Fargo Public Schools encourages families to complete a free/reduced meal application each year. Currently, 1,067 qualified students from last year have not yet completed an application for this year.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Department of Agriculture recently issued a waiver that allows the school district to provide free meals to all students in the district, regardless of previous program eligibility. However, it is important that families still complete the free/reduced meal application to ensure the accuracy of families’ and the district’s free/reduced rate. The free/reduced rate is a federally recognized measure of poverty and low-income status and is used to determine funding, fees, and grant availability for the district and families.

For individual students, their qualification for free or reduced meals can also determine eligibility for school activity fee waivers, waivers for national standardized tests, and discounted college application fees.

The online application is available on the Food Service Department webpage and can be completed anytime during the school year. A paper application may be printed from the webpage and returned to the school office or mailed to the Food Service Department. Proof of income is not needed at the time of application.
