Sheyenne High Mustang Volleyball Wins First State Title

West Fargo, ND – (November 23, 2022) –Sheyenne High Mustang Volleyball returned from the NDHSAA Class A Volleyball Tournament with the first volleyball state title in school history. After winning the school’s first Eastern Dakota Conference Championship the team defeated Bismarck Century in a five-set championship match to secure the title in their first title match appearance. Several athletes were awarded honors and Head Coach Leah Newton was voted 2022 NDHSCA Class A Volleyball Coach of the Year.

Heading into the EDC tournament, the Mustangs had a 22-0 in-conference record. The Mustangs defeated the Horace High Hawks, the Fargo North Spartans, and then the West Fargo High Packers to secure the first Eastern Dakota Conference Championship in Mustang Volleyball history. At the conclusion of the tournament Head Coach Leah Newton was voted 2022 NDHSCA Class A Volleyball Coach of the Year. “It is quite an honor to be named coach of the year by your peers.  I really appreciate it and want to recognize our assistant coaches.  It was a fantastic year in so many ways and it’s really nice to recognize our staff and their efforts this season,” says Newton. 

The Mustangs then took on the Class A Volleyball Tournament. Defeating Bismarck St. Mary’s and Jamestown in the quarter and semi-finals had the Sheyenne High Mustangs taking on the Bismarck Century Patriots in the finals Saturday evening. A close five-set championship match had the Mustangs taking home the first volleyball state title in school history. When asked about the back-to-back firsts, Head Coach Newton said, “I am not sure words can fully describe how excited and happy we are to take home the EDC championship and state championship. The state championship match was a fun, hard fought match and to win in 5 sets, it’s truly awesome.  Being a part of the first state title in volleyball at Sheyenne is special and something we will never forget.” 

After the tournament the all-state and all-tournament teams were announced with several Mustangs receiving honors. Kailee Waasdorp received All-EDC, 1st Team All-State and State All-Tournament Team honors. Reagain Bogenreif received All-EDC, 1st Team All-State and State All-Tournament Team honors. Khloe Brown received All-EDC and 2nd Team All-State honors. Brooke Johnson was named to the State All-Tournament Team.

The Sheyenne High School team is coached by Leah Newton with assistant coaches Kevin Bray, Katie Richardson and Kyle Toy.
