School Board Selects Name for Next Elementary School

West Fargo, ND – (April 26, 2022) – At last night’s School Board meeting, Board members selected Meadowlark Elementary School as the name for the district’s next elementary school.

From March 1 – March 31, West Fargo Public Schools invited members of the community to submit suggestions for the name of the school, to be located west of Veterans Boulevard and north of 52nd Avenue South in Fargo’s Rocking Horse Farm 6th Addition. Nearly 350 submissions were received, from which each School Board member selected up to three names to represent their top choices. At the April 11, 2022, School Board meeting, the seven top choices were discussed:

  • Dakota Elementary School
  • Frontier Elementary School
  • Heartland Elementary School
  • Meadowlark Elementary School
  • Prairie Rose Elementary School
  • Rocking Horse Elementary School
  • Veterans Elementary School

With support from the majority of the Board, four names were removed from the list: Dakota, Frontier, Heartland, and Prairie Rose. The three names remaining were placed on a ranked ballot for each member to complete:

  • Meadowlark Elementary School
  • Rocking Horse Elementary School
  • Veterans Elementary School

The results of the ranking indicated Meadowlark Elementary School as the top choice for four members, Rocking Horse Elementary School as the top choice for two members, and Veterans Elementary School as the top choice for one member. Following discussion at Monday’s meeting, the Board voted 5 – 2 to name the school Meadowlark Elementary School.

The western meadowlark is the official state bird of North Dakota.
