The 2020 U.S. Census is underway!

The 2020 U.S. Census is underway!

The Census determines North Dakota's portion for all federal funds for the next 10 years. For example, the $1.45 billion in federal funds the state received in 2015 was based on the resident counts from the 2010 Census.

It is important that every person living in North Dakota, born on or before April 1, 2020, be counted in the Census.

For every resident of North Dakota, the state receives $1,910 in federal funds per year. For every missed resident in the Census, the state loses these funds each year, totaling $19,100 over the next decade. These funds are used to support North Dakota programs and infrastructure. Education programs (Title 1, Head Start), health programs (CHIP, Medicare, Medicaid), nutrition programs (National School Lunch Program, WIC, SNAP), foster care, child care, public transit, road construction, public housing, and emergency services all receive funding based on state Census data.

You may have already received your official information in the mail from the U.S. Census Bureau, but have you completed your Census response? In times when families are busy and practicing social distancing, you can utilize the online submission to do so. West Fargo Public Schools families are encouraged to use their district-issued device to submit a Census response.

Be sure to count everyone staying in your home including children, friends, and family; if they live and sleep in your home the majority of the time, they need to be counted at your residence.

All submitted data is protected by law and records are confidential for 72 years. The U.S. Census Bureau will never share a respondent's personal information with other government agencies, landlords, immigration officials, or political parties.
