Frequently Asked Questions
CAN STUDENTS BRING THEIR PERSONAL DEVICE?
If your child is in a grade using devices provided by the District, he/she will be asked to use a school-issued device due to app licensing and the instructional materials that will be loaded on the devices for classroom learning.
CAN TEACHERS REQUEST APPS?
We do have an online request system for teachers to request apps. This information will be shared at our back-to-school training.
DO STUDENTS USE THE DEVICE IN ALL CLASSES?
West Fargo teachers have the discretion of allowing or not allowing the use of electronic devices during instructional time. The versatility of the device's touch screen and built in keyboard make it an ideal tool for all subjects, from art to history.
When teachers permit the use of electronic devices, students must adhere to district technology policies, use the devices for educational purposes only, and must not cause a distraction or disruption to the learning environment.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A STUDENT BREAKS THE DEVICE?
Students who damage their device will be charged a $25 repair fee on the first occurrence and $75 on the second occurrence. Any student who intentional damages their device will be charged full cost for repairing or replacing device.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A STUDENT'S DEVICE IS TAKEN AWAY FOR IMPROPER USE?
A loaner device will be provided during the school day.
WHAT IF A STUDENT IS EXPERIENCING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES?
When technical issues arise, teachers understand, and students are not penalized. Teachers do not prohibit students from completing assignments on paper. Devices that malfunction must be reported to the designated location (help desk) within the school, or the damage may be considered a result of negligence. In the event the device malfunctions outside of the school day, wait until the next school day to report the issue. Do not attempt to gain access to the internal electronics or repair your device.
An important life skill for students is to learn to save and back-up work (on a desktop or other device). Using cloud storage, device students specifically back up their work on the device in Microsoft OneDrive. Students have received instruction on this process and teachers remind students the importance of doing so frequently.
WILL A KEYBOARD BE PROVIDED FOR EDUCATORS?
Yes, all teachers can request a case with a keyboard.
WILL A KEYBOARD BE PROVIDED FOR STUDENTS?
Keyboards will also be provided for ELA classrooms and available for checkout in classrooms doing extensive written assignments. We will find that most students do not prefer a keyboard. However, we will also have a long-term checkout system for student who prefer a keyboard.
WILL STUDENTS BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD THEIR OWN APPS?
No, students will only have access to apps from the School Store located on the Mosyle Device Manager. All students will be issued a school Apple ID and will not be able to create their own.
WILL STUDENTS BE ALLOWED TO PRINT FROM THEIR DEVICE?
No, we want to avoid 1,500 students having free access to all printers. However, printing stations will be available for students to access their cloud-stored documents to print.
