    Bus 61 cancelled next week

    Due to a shortage of drivers, bus 61 (both morning and afternoon) have been cancelled for the week of March 20th to 24th.

    Parents/guardians are encouraged to make alternate arrangements for their child(ren) to get to and from school next week. 

    We appreciate the flexibility and support of all our families as we navigate these driver shortages to the best of our abilities.

    The word yearbook on letter blocks

    Every student will receive a yearbook order form from their teacher this week.  Yearbooks will be $20 and can be ordered online at in the School Fee Section or you can fill out the order form and return it to the school with cash or check.  All orders must be submitted and paid for by Wednesday, March 29.  We DO NOT order extra yearbooks to sell, so if you want one you need to order it by the deadline.

    Kindergarten Pre-Registration

    Online pre-registration is now open for families to register students who will be entering kindergarten fall 2023. To attend the 2023-2024 school year, kindergarten students must be five years old by July 31, 2023.  You can find the registration form on the WFPS website under the families tab,registration,choose Kindergarten 2023-2024.    

    Grade 5 Families

    All 5th grade families should have received an email from Cheney Middle School about the opportunities this spring to get prepared for starting 6th grade in the fall. 

    MUSIC CHOICEmegaphone

    All 6th graders will have the opportunity to choose a music class (Orchestra, Band, or Choir).  Music is a requirement for all 6th graders, so one of these choices must be selected

    In March, Cheney Music teachers will be visiting each elementary school to share information about each class, so students can decide which is the best fit for them. There will be an Open-House for students and parents where they can try out different types of instruments and meet the music teachers.

    Tuesday, March 21 – CMS music teachers travel to Elementary Schools (WESTSIDE, LE BERGER, HARWOOD)

    Wednesday, March 22 – CMS music teachers travel to Elementary Schools (WLLOW PARK, EASTWOOD, SOUTH)

    Thursday, March 23 – 5th grade Music Open House from 5:30-7:00PM at Cheney Middle School; Choir Room 1224, Band Room 1214, Orchestra Room 1208

    Friday, March 24 – 5th grade families will be emailed an online form to select their student’s music choice for 2023-24 school year.



    The transition from elementary school to middle school can be overwhelming so we want to make sure that students (and parents) feel prepared and ready for the first day of school!

    In April, our incredible team of Counselors will be visiting each elementary school to share a little about what to expect as a 6th grader and answer any questions you may have.  We will also be hosting an Orientation Night here at Cheney where you can tour the building, meet some of our amazing staff, and even practice going through the lunch line!

    Between April 3-14 – CMS counselors will travel to Elementary Schools

    From the WFPS Transportation Dept.  

    Since the week of January 23, 2023, West Fargo Public Schools has been forced to cancel multiple bus routes each week. Due to the chronic bus driver shortage, WFPS will unfortunately need to continue cancelling routes each week for the foreseeable future. A schedule of all district bus routes was randomly generated to determine the order in which routes will be cancelled; click HERE to view the schedule. 

    The official determination of how many and which routes will be cancelled each week will be made and communicated to impacted families and schools no later than 5:00PM every Wednesday. 

    It is the district’s hope that the driver situation improves; efforts are being made to recruit regular route drivers as well as individuals (including existing coaching staff) interested in driving activity routes. If you or someone you know (including current staff members) is interested in driving a route before school, after school, or for activities, please contact our Director of Transportation, Brad Redmond, to discuss possibilities. There is no simple solution to this problem; it will take all of us to come up with creative solutions and minimize disruptions to our learners’ routines.

    Remind your child to bring their winter gear to school. We need all students to dress for going out in the cold weather. Students go outside for 20 minutes of recess every day.  We need students to be safe and warm by wearing a winter coat, snowpants, hat, gloves and boots.  If you are having trouble providing these items for your child, contact our counselor, Mrs. Brandi Krabbenhoft or call the school.  

    South Art Gallery

    Each week Mrs. Gieser will highlight student art work by displaying it in our South Art Gallery right outside the library.

    This week will feature the following students:

    Mrs. Peterson’s first grade class: Titus, Abigail, Paytyn, Logan, Cordelia, Olivia, Emery, Oushtaw, Rylen, Ayden, Fatumazahraa, Emmelyn, Oliver, Tenley, Masoud, DJ, Charlie, Amelia, Samphelia, Bentley, Ruby, Jeremiah, and Ethan.

    Join PTA PTA words
    Support South Elementary students and staff by becoming part of the PTA!   We encourage EVERYONE to join the South Elementary PTA. Parents, grandparents, teachers, community members; anyone interested in supporting education at South Elementary School. Be involved! Be heard! Be your students’ biggest fan!  By simply joining the South Elementary PTA, you are advocating on behalf of all children (including your own!) No additional commitment is required!  Members are invited to participate in 6 monthly meetings, receive meeting minutes, provide input on upcoming events sponsored by the PTA and get to know the teachers and families of South Elementary!

Weekly Announcements


  • If your student is going to be absent, late for school or leaving early, please notify our office at 701-356-2100 or and also notify your classroom teacher(s).  It is helpful to notify both places in the event that the classroom teacher is not in that day.  

    If you are changing your students after school plans please contact the office before 2:00pm so we have time to notify the classroom teacher.  

    If you have any phone or email changes, please update your parent portal account.  

    Semester one milk ($36) can be paid online at in the school fees section.

  • If you would like to join your student for lunch some day at school, please note the following guidelines:  

    • Parents need to call the office by 9:00am to let us know who is coming and what choice they want for lunch, 701-356-2100.
    • No outside fast food, pop or candy is allowed in the lunchroom.
    • Parents cannot be on the playground with their child.
    • Adult lunch is $3.70, payable by cash or check. We cannot take credit/debit cards at school.  
    • Parents eating lunch with their children can only take pictures of their own children.

  •  Drop Off and Pick Up Procedures Clock

    7:30am - 7:50am - Drop off for breakfast at door #2 on 6th Ave. - Breakfast students only

    8:00am - First bell rings - All students who are parent drop off or walkers enter door #1 (students who aren't eating breakfast)

    8:10am - Tardy bell rings - students need to come to the office for a tardy slip

    2:40pm - School dismisses for all students

    • Please do not leave your vehicle unattended in the drop off zone.  If you need to walk into the school please use a parking space away from the drop off zone. 
    • When dropping off or picking up your child curb-side, please pull all the way forward along the curb so you are directly behind the vehicle in front of you. This will allow as many cars as possible in the lane at one time.
    • Do Not double park on the road
    • Make sure your child enters and exits the car on the sidewalk
    • Kindly reserve “handicap” designated parking spaces for those displaying a handicap permit in their vehicle. It’s the law!
    • Thank you for helping ensure our students remain safe and drop-off and pick up times runs smoothly.
