In-District Transfer

In-District Transfer Process

An in-district transfer allows a learner who resides within West Fargo Public Schools boundaries to request attendance at a school other than their assigned neighborhood school.

Transfers are based on space availability and district criteria. Approval is not guaranteed.

Elementary In-District Transfer Request:

Families with elementary school learners interested in pursuing an in-district transfer should complete the online application form.  Acceptance of applications is contingent upon space availability at both the requested school and the assigned school and is not guaranteed on an annual basis. Families will be responsible for providing transportation to and from the requested school for the duration of the in-district transfer.

New in-district transfer requests must be submitted by August 1 for the upcoming school year. Any requests received after August 1 but before the first day of school may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the learner's home school and the requested school's principal.

Families will receive notification regarding the status of their application no later than August 15th. It's important to note that an in-district transfer application is valid for one school year, and individuals must resubmit their application by May 1st of the following school year.

All in-district transfer approvals are valid for one school year only. To maintain a transfer into the following school year, families must submit a renewal application by May 1.

Secondary In-District Transfer Request:

Families with learners in secondary schools (grades 6–12) who are seeking an in-district transfer must complete the online application form. Similar to elementary-level transfers, approval is based on space availability at both the requested and currently assigned schools.  Approved secondary transfers remain in effect through graduation, provided the learner remains in good standing.

Important Information Regarding Transfers:

  • Transportation: Families are responsible for providing transportation to and from the requested school for the duration of the transfer.
  • Application Timelines:
Secondary in-district transfer requests are processed twice per academic year—once before each semester.
    • Semester 1 Requests: Must be submitted by August 1.
Applicants will be notified of their transfer status no later than August 15.
    • Semester 2 Requests: Must be submitted by December 1.
Applicants will be notified of their transfer status no later than December 15.
  • Returning to Home School: Once a transfer is approved, learners must remain at the requested school until the start of the next semester before returning to their home boundary school.
