ACBG-AP: Scent-Free Workplace

Purpose

West Fargo Public Schools is committed to providing a safe, healthy, and inclusive work environment for all educators, learners, and visitors. Exposure to scented products may cause adverse health effects for some individuals, including headaches, nausea, dizziness, respiratory issues, and allergic reactions. A “scent-free” environment means minimizing or eliminating the use of products with strong fragrances.

Scope

This policy applies to all educators, contractors, volunteers, learners, and visitors to district facilities.

Examples of Scented Items

The following are examples of items that may contain fragrances and should not be used in the workplace:

  • Perfumes, colognes, and body sprays
  • Scented lotions, creams, and aftershaves
  • Scented hair products
  • Essential oils or oil diffusers
  • Scented candles and candle warmers
  • Air fresheners and plug-ins

This list is not exhaustive.

Employee Responsibilities

Employees are expected to be mindful of how scented products may impact others and to comply with this policy in shared spaces. Employees are encouraged to use fragrance-free or unscented alternatives whenever possible.

Enforcement

This policy is intended to promote awareness and cooperation, not discipline. However, repeated or intentional disregard for the policy may be addressed through standard supervisory or administrative processes.
