ABCC-E2: Health & Nutrition Goals & Standards

Standard

Measurement & Evaluation

  • Use district-wide nutrition and physical activity committee for the purposes of developing guidance to explicate this policy, evaluate policy progress, and revise the policy as needed

  • District funds, along with the pursuit of outside funding sources, are used to promote and establish components of this state-mandated wellness policy


Nutrition Education

  • Consistent nutrition education is integrated into K - 12 standards-based curriculum

  • As per state requirements, a minimum of 40 minutes per week of health instruction for grades 1 - 3

  • As per state requirements, a minimum of 80 minutes per week of health instruction for grades 4 - 6

  • As per state requirements, a minimum of 3,600 minutes or 60 clock hours of health instruction for grades 7 or 8 (or both)

  • As per state graduation requirements, a minimum of 0.5 credit of health instruction in grades 9 - 12

  • School personnel practice consistency of nutrition messages through the curriculum and environment

  • Staff responsible for nutrition education are adequately prepared to effectively deliver the health and nutrition education, as planned, through professional development opportunities


Nutrition Standards

Fundraising & Concessions

  • Healthy alternatives, including fruits and vegetables, are offered for sale at any location where food is sold

  • Water is offered for sale at any location where beverages are sold

  • Fundraising events and concession sales held within 30 minutes of the start or end of the school day, or during the school day, must meet USDA competitive food sale standards contained in 7 CFR 210.11, unless an administrator has made an exception in accordance with the Healthy School & Nutrition Environment policy

Parties, Celebrations, & Meetings

  • If held within 30 minutes of the start or end of the school day, or during the school day, and students are in attendance, they must meet USDA competitive food sale standards contained in 7 CFR 210.11, unless an administrator has made an exception in accordance with the Healthy School & Nutrition Environment policy; if food is provided to students during parties, celebrations, or school meetings outside of these times, consideration is given to providing a healthy alternative


Physical Activity

  • As per state requirements, a minimum of 90 minutes per week of physical education instruction for grades 1 - 6

  • As per state requirements, a minimum of 80 minutes per week of physical education instruction for grades 7 - 8

  • As per state graduation requirements, a minimum of 1.5 credits of physical education instruction, with 0.5 credits per year in grades 10 - 12

  • Students are provided the opportunity and encouragement to participate in a range of afterschool extracurricular activities, which include a variety of physical activity clubs and/or organized events

  • Elementary students are provided daily recess


Promoting Student Wellness

  • Student lunches are scheduled to ensure students have a minimum of 10 - 15 minutes to each a meal

  • The cafeteria environment provides students with an adequate space to eat in clean, pleasant surroundings and convenient access to hand washing or hand sanitizing facilities before meals

  • West Fargo Public Schools stakeholders have access to district facilities for physical activities after school hours, as per administrative policy ABBB-AP: Use of District Facilities for Other than School Purposes

  • Nutrition education and information is provided to parents/guardians and stakeholders in the form of handouts, postings on the district website, articles, and information in school and district newsletters, presentations that focus on nutritional value and healthy lifestyles, or other appropriate means for reaching parents

  • Staff is encouraged to be good nutrition role models

  • A district staff wellness committee provides newsletters and activities promoting healthy lifestyles

  • Health services are provided, as appropriate, through the district's nursing staff

  • Staff is expected to follow administrative policy DEA-E: Health & Safety to promote physical health and safety of all students
