Program Overview

  • CHENEY MIDDLE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

    • Create Respectful and Responsible individuals in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities.
    • Emphasize the importance of Rigor through hard work and doing your best.
    • Promote teamwork that contributes to Relationships and character development.

What to expect with Cheney Middle School Activities:

     Participation

    • Cheney Middle School athletics are designed to accommodate all skill levels and be a positive experience.
    • Cheney Middle School athletics are open to 7th and 8th graders that attend Cheney Middle School.  Players do not have to have previous experience.
    • The NDHSAA states that an athlete must participate in nine practices before he can participate in a game.
    • Prior to starting practice, the following steps are required:

    Coaching

    • Most coaches are teachers employed by the West Fargo Public School District, contributing to an organized, learning environment for players.
    • Coaches are enthusiastic and committed to teaching skills, game play, and sportsmanship, creating a positive learning environment for all players.
    • Coaches will focus on teaching the basic skills of their sport.
    • Teamwork and sportsmanship will be an emphasis during all practices and games.

    Academic Eligibility

    • 7th & 8th Grade: Every week we will be running your child’s behavior (CCR) grades to determine eligibility. If any athlete has a ‘1’ in two or more CCR’s they will not be eligible to play in any games during that week but will be required to attend practice.
    • Players, families, and coaches will be notified via email if their student is ineligible for that week's competitions.

    Team Rosters

    • Separate teams are established for grade 7 and grade 8.
    • The number of teams is based on participants registered each year.
    • Our goal is to maintain an appropriate coach-to-player ratio and team enrollment that contributes to a positive experience for both.
    • Once confirmed, team rosters will be available on our CMS Rosters & Schedules website.

    Practices

    • Practices are a combination of hard work and fun!
    • Practices will be held Monday - Friday: 7:00 - 8:15 A.M., 4:00 - 5:15 P.M. or 5:15 - 6:30 P.M. Wednesday: 4:00 - 5:00 P.M. and 5:00 - 6:00 P.M.. (Coaches will provide players detailed practice schedules based on team assignments and games.)
    • Players should wear appropriate practice gear, including shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes. No jewelry!
    • Athletes are expected to be at all practices unless they are absent from school because of illness, experience a family emergency, or have some other legitimate excuse.  (An advance phone call, e-mail, or other notification to the head coach is appreciated)
    • Unexcused absences from practices will result in either a warning, a missed game, or a dismissal from the team (depending of the frequency of the unexcused missed practices).
    • If an athlete is injured, she is still expected to be at practice.  (Participation will vary depending on the severity of the injury).

    SWAY Baseline Concussion Test

    • West Fargo Public Schools supports the safety of student athletes.
    • All 7th and 8th grade players who have not previously taken the SWAY Baseline Concussion test to obtain a baseline for concussion management will need to do so to participate.
    • If a head injury is suspected, that player will sit out and retest until the athletic trainer is satisfied with the results. At that time, returning to play protocol will begin.

    Games

    • Competition: F-M League Members: Discovery, Carl Ben, Ben Franklin, DGF, Liberty, Moorhead, and Sacred Heart.
    • Equal playing time is earned through regular attendance at practices and active participation in those practices. Playing time is ultimately determined by the CMS coaching staff.
    • Cheney Middle Schools players are highly encouraged to ride the bus back to school with other teammates and coaches.  If a player must leave after a game, a parent or guardian must sign the player out after the game is over.
    • While our goal is to win, our philosophy is to give athletes an opportunity to compete.
    • Once confirmed, game schedules will be available on our CMS Rosters & Schedules website.

Additional Notes Regarding Practice and Games

    • Cell phones are not to be used during practice, games, or in locker rooms.
    • Food is not allowed during practice and games.
    • Only water or sports drinks may be consumed during practice and games.
    • Equipment must remain in the gym during practice and on game days.

    Uniforms & Equipment

    • The school-issued uniforms can only be worn for games.  The uniforms cannot be worn as street wear or for physical education class.
    • Players provide their own tennis shoes.
