Business Curriculum

Business education focuses on the outcomes that reflect the knowledge, attitudes, and skills that students need to be productive consumers, workers, and citizens in our ever-changing world. Individuals need business and computer skills to survive in their professional and personal lives. Business education provides leadership, expertise, and training in technology and practices used in business. In addition, it provides meaningful and necessary applied learning experiences to meet the needs of all populations.
Course Descriptions

Accounting I
Accounting I is an introduction to the concepts of systematic keeping of financial records for a small business such as a proprietorship, a partnership, and the beginning of a corporation. Computers will be used for automated accounting. Simulations will incorporate actual business papers. This course will prepare students for careers in accounting, business, or office occupations.

Accounting II
This course is a continuation of Accounting I, providing students the opportunity to develop a deeper knowledge of accounting procedures. The student learns to analyze accounting data for making management decisions and to develop sound reasoning. Departmentalized accounting, cost accounting, managerial accounting, corporate accounting, and other related topics are included along with simulations and computer applications in accounting.

Advanced Keyboarding
Advanced Keyboarding is for students who struggled with keyboarding or are not ready to enter a computer applications course. Advanced Keyboarding emphasizes increased keying power. This course includes the formatting of letters, envelopes, tables, reports, term papers, manuscripts, memorandums, and a variety of business forms.

Business Finance
This course is intended to provide a basic background of business for the general consumer and to explore the world of business. Students will learn skills and concepts needed for personal and business use, including banking and budgeting, checking and savings, investing and credit, communication and decision-making, record management and taxes, marketing and consumerism, and computer technology. They will gain an insight into the world of business, careers, opportunities, and entrepreneurship through career searches, various projects and simulations, and guest speakers. Business Finance is designed to assist all students in acquiring an understanding of the many facets of the American business environment.

Business Law
This class gives students an introduction to the history of the American legal system. Students will explore criminal law, civil law, personal and tort law, contract law, landlord-tenant laws, insurance laws, and other topics related to the legal system. This course is designed to provide an awareness of the law as it relates to the student’s role as a consumer. Guest speakers and field trips may be included as they become available.

Exploring Business Computer Applications
The Microsoft Office Suite is one of the most common software programs in schools and office setting for production of documents, spreadsheets, brochures, presentations, and more. In this course, students will receive introductory units in Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint to apply skills to business and office projects. Time may spent on improving keyboarding skills if needed.

Fundamentals of Business
Fundamentals of Business is an introductory course to prepare students who are interested in exploring the idea of pursuing a career in the business environment. Students will get prepared for the business world by learning about the essentials of business, developing 21st Century Skills, learning to manage personal resources, evaluating ethics in the workplace, and exploring basic entrepreneurship. This course also provides concepts and knowledge to help prepare students for making valuable decisions in everyday living. Guest speakers from local businesses and organizations will be included as they become available.

Web Design
Web sites of Instagram? Web sites continue to be the foundation for today’s companies and/or entrepreneurs to promote and sell business products. The Web Design course teaches students to think like a designer and apply web based technology skills to build a web site. Students will learn how to use Web development software to create a basic site, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) to manipulate pages, and Photoshop to edit graphics. Students will learn how to format and design basic Web pages using links, navigation bars, images, image maps, tables, forms, Flash text, AP Elements, and Templates.
