Driver's Education Curriculum
Driver's education teaches young people how to drive a motor vehicle in a safe, economical, and responsible manner. It also provides instruction in the social, mental, and physical skills needed to successfully operate a motor vehicle in today's society.
Students under sixteen years old must complete special requirements to apply for a North Dakota driver license. Both requirements below must be completed at West Fargo High School or Sheyenne High School for our school district to issue a Driver Education Certificate:
- Pass the driver's education classroom portion (must be completed prior to Behind the Wheel).
- Complete Behind the Wheel and signup for summer session will be available in the spring.
Register for Behind the Wheel
West Fargo Public Schools will be offering a summer session of Behind the Wheel. This driving portion of the program is available to students going into 10th - 12th grades during the 2018 summer school session. Students can sign up for Behind the Wheel starting on Wednesday, April 4 at 7:30AM in the commons. Sign ups will be accepted until the session is full.
The classroom portion of Behind the Wheel is a require pre-requisite for signing up for the program's driving portion. Students who are 14 - 15 years old and have not pass the classroom portion will not be eligible to enroll in the driving portion.
The cost of the session is $205. The fee is due at the time of sign up and is non-refundable. Checks should be written out the student's attending high school.
We are unable to change session times once they are scheduled, so please look over your summer schedules to avoid conflicts and insure a high level of commitment. Absences that need to be made up will cost the student an additional $25.00 per hour.
A permit is not required for the Behind the Wheel driving portion, but they are strongly recommended. However, students are required by North Dakota law to have a permit when driving with anyone else. Students will be issued a certificate upon completion of the program; this certificate is very important as it is required by the DMV when taking the driving test. Please keep this document in a secure place once it is received.
Students should arrive at their driving sessions five minutes early. All sessions leave from the parking lot.
If you have additional questions about Behind the Wheel, please contact your high school's main office.
