4MAT is a learning and teaching methodology developed by Bernice McCarthy in 1979. The 4MAT method is an instructional process for delivering instruction in a way that appeals to all types of learners and engages, informs, allows for practice and creative use of material learned within each lesson. 4MAT can be applied to any teaching situation and with any learner.
West Fargo High School students take the 4MAT assessment during the first quarter of their freshman year. The purpose of this assessment is to help students understand how they best learn new material and for teachers to understand individual learning styles of students. Teachers will be able to make decisions about curriculum and design or redesign lesson plans based on the learning styles of their students. The assessment identifies four learning preferences and refers to them as “Types”
- Type 1
- Type 2
- Type 3
- Type 4
