South Elementary
Counseling
Welcome to my school web page and thank you for taking an interest in your child's developmental guidance program. I have been the elementary school counselor at South Elementary since 2000 and each year I look forward to another rewarding experience. The following information addresses typical questions from parents and will provide insight into the guidance/counseling program at South Elementary. If you have additional questions or would like to schedule a visit please feel free to stop by my office or contact me 356-2100. I will always be available to help.
Tami Chyle, South Elementary Counselor
What does an elementary counselor do?
Large group guidance lessons are provided in the classroom twice a month. Topics include areas such as problem-solving, social skills, character education, coping skills, anger management and career education. The guidance lessons align with the district counseling standards.
Short-term counseling services are also available to assist students. Occasionally children need assistance with the developmental challenges of making friends, separating from parents while at school and learning appropriate social behavior. Some children may also encounter difficulties such as divorce or separation from family, moving or the loss of a loved one.
Small group counseling sessions are available to provide students with information and to offer support through a difficult situation. Groups are formed on an as-needed basis and include such topics as study skills, loss, friendship, divorce, etc.
I am also available for consultation with parents and teachers regarding a student’s social, emotional, academic or behavioral concerns. Assistance is also available for referrals to community agencies.
How to make use of the counseling services?
Students can refer themselves by completing a counseling referral slip. The slips are located in the classroom for grades 1-3 and outside my office for students in grades 4 and 5. Teachers can refer students directly and parents may refer their child by stopping by the counselor’s office located next to the library or by contacting me at 356-2100.
Will parents be notified if their student is receiving counseling services?
Parent contact is made only when students take part in any on-going individual or small-group counseling.
