Horace Elementary

Philosophy

Horace Elementary School is dedicated to the purpose of developing the total child - academically, socially, emotionally, and physically - to prepare him/her to be a productive, involved citizen.

We believe we must strive to fulfill the academic potential of each student, and that an academic program which stresses the strong basics of education will form a firm foundation for present and future growth. We believe that this basic program must also include elements of remediation and enrichment to accommodate the individual differences in learning styles.

We believe that social interaction is an essential element of elementary education, and that learning proper social skills is necessary in our society. We feel that children must learn to respect the dignity of each other, and that a cooperative environment is one based on independence and interdependence.

It is also our belief that we can assist children in becoming rational emotive adults. We will strive to create an atmosphere where children feel positive about themselves, confident that they can succeed, and persistent in improving their shortcomings.

It is also our philosophy that a healthy body is necessary for good mental health. Our physical education and health programs will help children understand the need to develop good habits and to exercise regularly.

Finally, we believe that school success and a supportive home environment are interrelated and that parents be regularly informed of their children’s progress. Through quarterly report cards, scheduled conferences, and individual conferences as needed, we will communicate children’s strengths and deficiencies to parents so home and school can work cooperatively.
