Eastwood Elementary
Milk/Snack Break
This year, fresh fruits and vegetables will be offered to all students during morning milk break Monday – Friday at Eastwood, at no charge.
This program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is an effective and creative way to introduce fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options. Fruits and vegetables will be served fresh without a dipping sauce so that children learn to enjoy them as they are.
This will begin the first day of school. Mondays will be a cracker packet day, and Tuesday through Friday will be fruit and vegetable days. When students come to the lunch room to pick up their classroom's milk for snack break, they will also pick up a tote of the fruit/vegetable for the day. The snack is taken back to the classroom and distributed and eaten there. One choice of fruit/vegetable is offered at a time. Unusual items such as jicama will be introduced when available so please encourage your child to try those as well as the foods he/she is familiar with. We will also be providing information on the healthy snacks daily with morning announcements to teach children about different fresh fruits and vegetables.
We are grateful for this grant, as it equates to approximately $55.00 per child for the school year. Due to tracking the food items provided through the grant, we ask your help in not sending snacks to school this year for milk break if possible. The school will provide all snacks free of charge. It is a great opportunity for our families to save money, allow your children to try healthy foods, and assist us in helping fight obesity and encourage healthy eating. If you feel your child needs additional healthy snack nutrition at milk break along with what we serve or has allergies/medical concerns and must bring his/her own snack, please inform the classroom teacher and we will do our best to assist you and your child's needs. We are funded for every child in our school, so we hope that every family will take advantage of this free offer. Children may purchase milk or juice to drink during the snack break if you wish.
If your child needs an alternative or additional healthy snack on top of what the school provides, please select items from this healthy list of choices and serving size information.
