Cheney Middle School

General Information

The Cheney Middle School is located at 825 17th Avenue East in West Fargo. Our middle school opened in the fall of 2004. Cheney Middle School is part of the fastest growing community in North Dakota and serves all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in the West Fargo School District.

The West Fargo School District began a commitment to middle level education in 1967 and continues to be a model middle school in the upper mid-west.

In 1994, we began implementing interdisciplinary team teaching school-wide. This educational concept is proven and the benefits have been significant and measurable. We are pleased with the outcomes of the initiatives that we have instituted at Cheney Middle School.

The Cheney Middle School subscribes to a philosophy that the unique needs of students in grades 6 through 8 can best be met in a middle school setting that provides a student-centered program and recognizes that the students of this age are undergoing greater physiological, psychological, and social re-orientation than at any other period in their lives.

The overall purpose of any effective middle school should be to meet the educational, developmental, and social needs that emerge in this transitional period. The middle school program should provide a supportive and flexible environment so students will have opportunities to develop skills and explore a variety of learning experiences while making the transition from elementary to high school.

In keeping with this philosophy, the Cheney Middle School will establish and provide:

  • A core curriculum of language arts, math, science, and social studies.
  • Exploratory programs and activities in all areas of the curriculum to help students discover and extend their interests and abilities.
  • Packer-time and a proactive counseling program.
  • A supportive environment for the physical and social development of every student.
  • A gradual transition in programs from the self-contained classroom of the 5th grade to the departmentalized structure of the high school.
  • Co-curricular and Intramural activity programs to accommodate the needs of the early adolescent.
  • A positive climate that fosters self-esteem, self-discipline, relationship building, and student responsibility.
  • Knowledgeable educators who care about students and are committed to the middle school design.
  • An ongoing program of training and professional skills that are based on the characteristics and needs of the adolescent.
  • Close and frequent contact and communication between parents and school.
  • A challenging curriculum and pace of learning to meet individual levels and understanding.
  • Opportunities for intervention and acceleration when needs are identified.

The Cheney Middle School staff consists of 150 teachers, administrative assistants, school nurses, paraprofessionals, food service personnel, custodians, counselors and administrators. All staff members are dedicated to the education, growth, and developmental needs of early adolescents and provide a safe, nurturing, and caring educational environment for all of our students.

At our school, the educational process revolves around a partnership between students, school staff, and parents, with everyone working to achieve the same goals for students.

The middle school begins each school year with a Back-to-School Night to provide parents and teachers with an opportunity to get acquainted. Course content, classroom procedures, and classroom expectations are presented and discussed. Parent-student-teacher conferences are held twice each year. Conference time is one of the best opportunities for teachers and parents to discuss each student’s progress and encourages open communication between home and school. Teachers, counselors, and administrators are available to meet with parents and students as needed. Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is an issue or situation we need to be aware of.

Throughout the year there are many opportunities for students to be involved in activities. We offer a fll range of academic and athletic co-curricular activities. The staff of the Cheney Middle School encourages positive parent participation in the educational process and looks forward to working with you to continue your student’s learning and future success.
