THE ROLE OF THE BOARD

The school board is a policy-making body. They set the policies for the management of the district that the superintendent and the district staff then carry out. The School Board:

  • Approves the budget.
  • Establishes goals and priorities.
  • Acquires and disposes of property.
  • Serves as a link between the school system and the public.
  • Interprets educational needs and concerns of the community.

In addition to attending the board meetings, members serve as liaisons to various district and non-district committees.

BOARD MEETINGS

Board meetings are held the second and fourth Mondays of each month, at 6:00 p.m. The meetings are held on a rotation basis between all school buildings and the Leidal Education Center. Inquire at the administration office about the schedule.

All meetings are open to the public.

THE AGENDA

Copies of the agenda are available at the door. Also, agendas are available in the superintendent’s office the day of the meeting, are posted in school buildings by the Friday preceding the meeting, and are printed in the Pioneer the week preceding the meeting.

Board members receive agendas and supporting documents in advance of each meeting so they can study the material and be prepared to make decisions.

Because the board needs complete information prior to making decisions, usually they will not act on items that are not on the agenda.

AGENDAS & MINUTES

The administrative office of the board shall be maintained at the Leidal Education Center.

The School Board is made up of seven residents of the West Fargo School District elected at large to four-year terms. They receive a $4,000 annual compensation.

Annual school board elections for three or four positions on the board are held in conjunction with the county elections. Registration is not required to vote. New directors take their seats in July and the board elects new officers at that time.

The president of the board conducts the meetings. Superintendent Dr. David Flowers, Assistant Superintendent Louise Dardis, Business Manager Mark Lemer, Human Resources Director Robin Hill, and Technology Director Robert Kaspar function as resources to the board during the meetings. Heather Leas serves as administrative assistant for the board.
