THE ROLE OF THE BOARD

The school board is a policy-making body. They set the policies for the management of the district that the superintendent and the district staff then carry out. The School Board:

  • Approves the budget.
  • Establishes goals and priorities.
  • Acquires and disposes of property.
  • Serves as a link between the school system and the public.
  • Interprets educational needs and concerns of the community.

In addition to attending the board meetings, members serve as liaisons to various district and non-district committees.

BOARD MEETINGS
  • Board meetings are typically held the second and fourth Mondays of each month, at 6:00 PM. All meetings are held at the Leidal Education Center, 207 Main Avenue West, West Fargo. A complete schedule can be found on this webpage, or by inquiring at the district office.
  • All meetings of the board are open to the public, unless specifically noted.

THE AGENDA
  • The agenda is available online, at the district office and at all school buildings by the Friday preceding the meeting.
  • Board members receive agendas and supporting documents in advance of each meeting, so they can study the material and be prepared to make decisions.
  • Because the board needs complete information prior to making decisions, they typically will not act on items that are not on the agenda.

The School Board is made up of seven residents of the West Fargo School District elected at large to four-year terms. They receive a $4,310 annual compensation.

Annual school board elections for three or four positions on the board are held in conjunction with the county elections. Registration is not required to vote. New directors take their seats in July and the board elects new officers at that time.

The president of the board conducts the meetings. Superintendent Dr. David Flowers, Assistant Superintendent Louise Dardis, Business Manager Mark Lemer, Human Resources Director Robin Hill, Director of Assessments & Federal Programs Beth Slette and Technology Director Robert Kaspari function as resources to the board during the meetings. Heather Konschak serves as administrative assistant for the board.

TO VOICE YOUR OPINION

To place an item on the agenda you are asked to call the superintendent (356-2000) or the board president at least one week prior to the meeting.

Each individual speaker will be allowed three minutes for remarks. Issues or concerns involving personnel matters are not appropriate for this Public Comment setting. After 30 minutes of Public Comment, any speakers remaining will be recognized at the end of the agenda for their comments.

You are encouraged to discuss your questions or matters of concern at any time with the appropriate school personnel.
