Even though it was the regular season, the Fargo South student section stormed the floor after the final point Tuesday at West Fargo.
";We're so high right now, I don't know what can bring us down,"; South senior Sam Billing said.
Feeding off that emotion, the Bruins rallied for a 3-1 victory against the West Fargo Packers in Eastern Dakota Conference volleyball.
The game scores were 19-25,25-22, 25-20 and 25-23.
Billing was one of three South (16-7, 10-2 EDC points) hitters who had eight kills. The balance helped the Bruins hand West Fargo (16-5, 9-1) its first EDC loss.
";I think we gave South a little spark and they stomped all over it,"; West Fargo coach Nicole Peterson said.
";It's a big confidence boost for us to beat West Fargo,"; South coach Tonah Safranski said. ";But we know this is not the end goal.";
The Packers appeared on their way to another EDC victory as the end of Game 2 neared. Winners of the first game, West Fargo led 20-16 after a South hitting error.
However, the Bruins rallied for the next six points. Billing capped the rally with a kill on the left side that staked South to a 22-20 lead.
The Bruins won the second game 25-22 after the 5-foot-6 Billing tipped home the final point, to the delight of the South fans.
";I think that excitement is what gives us the edge in the game,"; Billing said.
";It just kind of kept rolling and we couldn't get that spark back,"; Peterson said. ";We seemed to be playing all uptight after that.";
South scored the first six points of Game 3 on the way to winning that game.
The Bruins closed out the match, pulling away late in fourth game. Billing again played an important role in the final push.
With the scored tied at 20-20, Billing had a tip kill and served and ace to spark a run of three straight South points. The Bruins built a 23-20 lead and held on for a 25-23 victory.
South senior middle hitter Brionna Simensen - who had eight kills - put away the final point, drawing the emotional response from the South crowd.
";It shows the other teams in the conference what we can do,"; said Billing, whose team lost to West Fargo earlier this season. ";We wanted to show West Fargo what we could do.";
The Packers were playing without junior setter Mary-Michael Vance, out with a shoulder injury.
";This was another test for us to see where we are at and what we need to improve on,"; Peterson said.
