Reach (Gifted Education) Services
Grades 1-5
GOALS:
- To give an additional academic challenge to those students who are high academically in language arts, reading, or math
- To give students who are high achievers in these areas to work with other students who have similar interests and abilities
- To train teachers in various ways to extend curriculum and meet the needs of these students in their classrooms
ORGANIZATION:
Students in grades 1-5 meet with the Reach teacher during their Intervention/Enrichment time for five days in a row. The daily schedule is determined by the school’s block schedule and when the Intervention/Enrichment block is scheduled for each grade in the school. A sample schedule might be:
10:00-10:45 – Grade 5
10:45-11:30 – Grade 4
11:30-12:15 – Grade 3
1:00-1:45 – Grade 2
1:45-2:30 – Grade 1
The two Reach teachers follow a rotation based on the day 1-5 schedule.

During the above times and rotations, students work together on an enrichment unit that is focused on math, language arts, or reading. These academic areas were selected because this is what is tested on the MAP tests.
STAFF:
Each grade 1-5 elementary school has a .25 FTE teacher for this program. She is in the building for five days out of every twenty school days. Jolene Beckman teaches at Aurora, Berger, Horace, and Osgood. Kim Sandvig teaches at Eastwood, South, and Harwood. Westside Elementary shares the two teachers.
IDENTIFICATION OF STUDENTS:
Students are identified based on MAP scores and/or teacher recommendations. Generally, students who score on the 95th percentile or above on reading, math, or language arts sections of the MAP tests are placed in the curriculum unit which matches that academic area. If there is space after those students are placed, teacher may recommend other students who they feel would benefit from this enrichment experience.
CURRICULUM:
Enrichment units are done in math, reading, or language arts on a rotation throughout the year. Units emphasize higher level thinking and problem solving.
TEACHER TRAINING:
Each time the enrichment/Reach teacher is in the building, she meets with staff for about 10 minutes during their superblock planning time to share ideas and give strategies for meeting the needs of gifted students in their classrooms.
